How to Install an APK on Android: Step-by-Step

By Live TV APK Team · Updated 2026-10-24 · 4 min read

Installing an APK on Android takes about a minute. The only unusual step is permitting your browser or file manager to install apps from outside Google Play.

Before you start

  • Check the app's required Android version (Settings → About phone).
  • Download only from a source you trust, never from a random link.
  • Keep at least 100 MB of free storage.

Steps to install an APK

  1. Download the file in your browser. Android may warn that this type of file can harm your device; this is a standard warning.
  2. Allow the source. When prompted, tap Settings and enable Allow from this source. On Android 8 and newer this is set per app (for example Chrome or Files), under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.
  3. Open the file from the Downloads folder or the browser notification.
  4. Tap Install, then Open.
  5. Turn the permission off again once you are done, to stay protected.

What about XAPK files?

An XAPK is a bundle that contains an APK plus extra data. Android cannot install it directly. Use an installer app that supports split APKs and bundles, open the XAPK with it and follow the prompts. Some Live TV releases are packaged this way.

Common errors

  • App not installed: the file may be corrupt, built for a different CPU, or signed differently from the version already installed. Uninstall the old version first.
  • Parse error: the app needs a newer Android version, or the download was incomplete.
  • Blocked by Play Protect: read the warning. If you are unsure about the source, do not continue.

FAQ

Do I need root to install an APK?

No. A normal APK installs without root once you allow installs from the source app.

Why won't my XAPK file install?

XAPK is a bundle format. You need an installer app that supports bundles instead of opening it with the default package installer.
